“I’m craving a pint of ice cream NOW but I’m not really hungry! What do I do?”
Those of us who struggle with eating issues often get quite anxious about experiencing cravings. We are doing just fine, eating lovely balanced meals, when the urge to eat ice cream – or cookies, chips, macaroni and cheese, you name it – floods our brain and makes us forget all of our resolutions.
We try to distract ourselves and white-knuckle our way through, but it doesn’t seem to work. On the contrary, It seems like the more we try to resist the cravings, the stronger they become.
We most often give into them and then feel emotional and physical pain.
My method, The Feel Good Solution, teaches you to see cravings not as enemies that need to be conquered but as sacred messengers telling us that we are disconnected from a deeper need like peace, love, or joy.
This shift in perception is truly miraculous: Imagine what it would feel like to stop fearing your cravings and start welcoming them instead!
The key lies in asking the following question when a craving arises: “What do I honestly need?”
Do I really need ice cream, or is it peace that I’m disconnected from? Do I really need cookies or is it love and connection that I’m longing for? Do I really need chips or am I depressed and looking to reconnect to joy?
Once you identify the deeper need, you can then more easily decide whether the ice cream (or cookies or chips) will best reconnect you to peace, love, or joy.
If the answer is yes, go ahead and eat that food. I often find that there are more effective strategies to meet those needs that have fewer painful consequences. I then act out on those strategies, meet the deeper need, and the cravings dissipates because it’s done its sacred job!!!
